چکیده مقاله:

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have both anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory effects through inducing the expression and production of adipokines. Adipokines such as apelin, have been observed to play a protective role in the incidence and progression of CVD. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation on the serum apelin levels in patients with cardiovascular disease. Methods: Forty-six male patients with CVD participated in the study. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups receiving either omega-3 fatty acids or a placebo. Participants received 4 g of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA: 720 mg, DHA: 480 mg) or a placebo (edible paraffin) for 8 weeks. Serum apelin levels, high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and lipid profiles were measured. Dietary intake, anthropometric parameters, body composition, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were evaluated before and after the 8 weeks of intervention. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 22. Results: Two participants from the placebo group withdrew from the study. Prior to the intervention, no significant differences were present between the two groups in age, body mass index, body composition, dietary intakes, lipid profiles and blood pressure. Compared to placebo, the intake of omega-3 fatty acids increased serum apelin levels (p= 0.018), decreased the levels of LDL cholesterol, and decreased serum hs-CRP concentrations (p= 0.007, p= 0.011 respectively). Additionally, the concentrations of VLDL, TG and hs-CRP (p= 0.037, p= 0.037 and p= 0.016 respectively) declined compared to baseline and final values in the omega-3 fatty acids group. Conclusions: Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation increases serum apelin and HDL concentrations, while decreasing serum LDL-C and hs-CRP levels.

The effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acids on coronary atherosclerosis. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND Epidemiologic studies, studies of mechanisms of action, and many animal studies indicate that dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids has antiatherosclerotic potential. Few trials in humans have examined this potential. OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids on the course of coronary artery atherosclerosis in humans. DESIGN Randomized, double-bli...

Omega-3 fatty acids in major depressive disorder. A preliminary double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Patients with depression have been extensively reported to be associated with the abnormality of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including significantly low eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in cell tissue contents (red blood cell membrane, plasma, etc.) and dietary intake. However, more evidence is needed to support its relation. In this study, we conducted an 8-week,...

Omega 3 fatty acids in bipolar disorder: a preliminary double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND Omega3 fatty acids may inhibit neuronal signal transduction pathways in a manner similar to that of lithium carbonate and valproate, 2 effective treatments for bipolar disorder. The present study was performed to examine whether omega3 fatty acids also exhibit mood-stabilizing properties in bipolar disorder. METHODS A 4-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, comparing omega...

Omega-3 fatty acids for major depressive disorder during pregnancy: results from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND Perinatal depression is common, and treatment remains challenging. Depression has been reported to be associated with the abnormality of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). A profound decrease of omega-3 PUFAs in the mother during pregnancy is associated with the higher demand of fetal development and might precipitate the occurrence of depression. In this study, we examined...

the effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on maternal depression during pregnancy: a double blind randomized controlled clinical trial

background: depression is one of the most debilitating disorders during pregnancy and its recovery and treatment are among the concerns of obstetrics and gynecology experts. the present study aimed to determine the effect of omega-3 supplement on mild depression during pregnancy among primiparous women. method: in this double-blind clinical trial, 80 primiparous women were randomly divided into...

Effects of omega-3 fatty acids on tobacco craving in cigarette smokers: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study.

Cigarette smoke induces oxidative stress with subsequent polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) peroxidation. Low concentrations of omega-3 PUFAs can affect neurotransmission, resulting in hypofunctioning of the mesocortical systems associated with reward and dependence mechanisms and thus may increase cigarette craving, hampering smoking cessation efforts. PUFA deficiency, in particular eicosapen...
